Fun + Purposeful Acts To Help 'Restore Our Earth' on Earth Day!

In honor of Earth Day, we are resurfacing our Love Letter to Our Earth blog which highlights our unique, virtual event initiative made for teams like yours in mind! Designed for enhancing corporate company culture, we created a variety of themed activities focused on fostering employee connections through conserving our planet. We’ve compiled a few of our favorite action items from this initiative that are educational, impactful, and fun.

For the Planet

  • Write a Letter for Earth Conservation - Gather virtually or safely in-person for a writing soiree to draft an email or letter to your local representatives about issues or policies important to the environment. If you decide on meeting in-person, guests could also be encouraged to bring recyclables for a collective donation.

  • Save the Seven Seas -  Play a unique and purposeful video game created by NASA that identifies and classifies species of coral to collectively help achieve ocean conservation efforts.

  • Be a Tree Hugger -  Join The Canopy Project in partnership with Earthday.org to contribute towards their reforestation program which helps conserve and restore trees, as well as plant new ones in critical areas around the globe that have been heavily impacted by climate change. For every $1 donated, a new tree is planted. You may also want to check out their reforestation map on the website to view specific planting projects around the globe.

  • Defend All Species -  Join the fight to protect all animals with an organization like the Humane Society International. They offer a variety of educational resources on their site along with a lengthy list of Calls to Action that you can join just by signing the petition or donating if possible.

  • Recycling 101 - Become a recycling ally and learn from the best. Switzerland and Japan are pioneers in recycling along with quite a few others; take some time to learn about the impact of their specific actions and other responsible recycling practices from around the world.

For the Community

  • Local Beach or Park Cleanup - Get outside for some fresh air and commit to a couple of hours of trash pickup in your local community. Set a goal and work towards it collectively by encouraging neighbors or friends to participate with you while following COVID recommended guidelines.

  • Active Transportation - Help reduce our planet’s carbon footprint by pledging to bike, skate or walk when traveling locally. If this is difficult to accomplish during the week, plan for a weekend of outdoor activities in your local community - enjoy a long & adventurous walk or go on a hike or bike ride.

  • Plant-Based Diet -  Go vegetarian or vegan for a week (or longer…) to help reduce greenhouse gases from meat processing. There are several blogs with fantastic plant-based recipes, such as Love & Lemons. Alternatively, get some inspo from vegan food influencer, Tabitha Brown. She’s widely known for her infectious personality while candidly cooking her favorite vegan recipes that highlight the textures and flavors we love about meat and seafood.

  • Upcycling Challenge -  Get crafty and practice the habit of thinking creatively with items in your household that would typically get thrown away. Involve your kiddos or invite a friend to join in on an upcycling project (or two) for turning trash into treasure.

  • Earth Day Shout Out - Initiate an arts & crafts project that could be fun for the whole family and encourages them to get outside too. Recycle an Amazon box or grocery bag to use as your poster, write an encouraging message & decorate with a nature collage of sticks, leaves or petals. Show off your work and display in a window for the neighborhood to see.

For the Home

  • Compost Creation - Learn how to create a nutrient-rich soil amendment from your yard trimmings and kitchen waste that can be added to your garden soil.  Attend an educational Composting Workshop from an organization like Recycle Smart to learn best practices for conserving water and reducing landfill waste.

  • Freshen Up Your Fridge - Discard all single-use plastics by replacing with eco-friendly storage alternatives. Get organizing tips from experts like The Home Edit and browse through container alternatives from The Organized Home.

  • Grow Food from Food - Create a garden of any size (with any vessel) from fresh seeds or even leftover food scraps. Get inspired by watching the ‘Gangsta Gardener’, Ron Finley, for tips & tricks on how to do this even in the toughest environments or smallest spaces.

  • Closet Purge - Share what you no longer need while also reducing fashion waste and extending the life of your clothing. ThredUp is a fantastic resource to aid this effort, and will send you a “Clean-Out Kit” to get started. Additionally, if you need some tidying inspo in other areas of your home  - Marie Kondo has a course available (cost $40).

  • Bye Bye Bleach - Go through your cleaning supply cabinet and research the ingredients that we spread through our homes...Earth Easy offers non-toxic home cleaning supplies and provides resources that teach you how to make your own safe & effective cleaning solutions.

We hope you find our list of activities & resources to be inspiring & motivating as we head into Earth Day. The more connections we can foster through this collective effort, the greater the impact.
